Studer is mostly known for their famous
analog tape machines, but they also build some great mixing consoles
from the 70th to the 90th. Besides the highly regarded 169/269 and
961/962 portable mixers that are very sought after today, they build
the large format 900 series as their flagship. The 900 series has
superb sounding preamps and a very gentle 4-band parametric eq with
additional hp/lp filters in the a-version and 3-semi-parametric
eq-bands in the b-version. The sonic clarity of the mic (and line)
preamp combined with super-musical and very flexible eq-filter section
will give your mix the spatial deepness it needs to make the
difference. Check the sound - Check the specs and build your own
opinion! Compared to a Neve or SSL mixer, the studer 900 didn´t have
all the nice routing and automation features the music studios needed
for mixdown. This and the extremly high price might be one of the
reasons, you don´t find too many consoles in music recording studios.
Another reason might be the difficulty to get the modules racked and running as external 19" outboard. While the Danner and Sitral modules only need 24V DC (and 48V DC for phantom power), the 900 series needs five different voltages and a proper 0V ground. |

| The VT900-series rack: We loved the sound of the studer 900 so much, that we installed one in our studio. We actually took two large consoles and made it one. With one master section and a producer-desk with DAW control and monitors in the middle. This was really a pita to do, but at the end we managed to get it done and learned a lot about the console. As a result of that project we can now offer you racking and recaping service for your Studer 900 series channelstrips (a- and b-versions) plus a small external psu that can feed up to four channels.
How to calculate the price for your custom VT900 series rack? • psu connector for the VT900 series psu • all soldering done - you only need to put in your modules • backpane pcb-layout by vintagetools. choose between electronicly or transformer-balanced output (Neutrik or Haufe-transformers) |
