Maihak W49 Hörspielverzerrer
The Maihak W49 was developed in the early 1950s for professional broadcast applications. This passive filter unit was designed to alter the sound of speech, music and sound effects for radio plays, film and television productions.
Two linked controls set the lower and upper cutoff frequencies, creating a variable passband. The high-pass and low-pass filters can be adjusted in fixed frequency steps between 100 Hz and 5 kHz. An additional control changes the filter intensity or slope across eight positions. This produces effects ranging from subtle bandwidth reduction to strongly focused, telephone-like and resonant sounds.
The elaborately constructed W49 operates entirely passively and requires a suitable amplifier to compensate for its insertion loss. It was originally designed for installation in broadcast production and control consoles.
Beyond broadcasting, the W49 became an important tool in early electronic music. Karlheinz Stockhausen used this type of filter in compositions including Mikrophonie I, Prozession and Kurzwellen.
Today, the Maihak W49 is a rare example of early professional sound-design equipment and a distinctive analogue effects processor with an unusual control concept and characteristic sonic response.
